Cobourg Community Centre
Services: Accessible Design Compliance
SPH conducted an accessible design review of the Cobourg Community Centre, on behalf of the Town of Cobourg. This two (2) storey Community Centre is a 143,000 SF structure, which consists of multi-purpose rooms and event venues, two arenas, walking/running track, double gymnasium, change rooms and other multi-functional spaces, including seniors room and youth centre. The municipal pad arena has seating for 400 spectators with the larger event arena seating 2000 spectators in a surrounding bowl arrangement.
The accessible design review included an evaluation of the site plan and architectural drawings to ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act’s “Proposed Accessible Built Environment Standard” (AODA ABES), which was applied at the time, the County of Northumberland’s Facility Accessibility Design Standards (FADS) and other best practices. A detailed report was prepared for the design team and client to identify accessibility non-compliance and to provide recommendations for improvements. Ongoing consultation with client, design team and stakeholders was conducted at various stages of the design process. An on-site deficiency review was also conducted during the construction phase.
